It's been a week since the SSS Hello Gorgeous release went live and I've been wanting to post one of my cards I made for the banner for this release. But I decided to make 4 more instead so I would have a "one stamp, five ways" post because I love the tulips in this set so much! The stamp set is called Mother's Day Tulips although these tulips are good for any theme! haha (the sentiments are about mother's though). Here is an image of the stamp set and matching die or they are sold as a bundle as shown here:
Of course I picked this flower to make five cards with as you all know I love to color! I ended up using colored pencils on 2 of the cards, my new Karin Decobrush Markers, and 2 with watercolors. Here are my five cards:
CARD 1:
I die-cut the largest SSS Mini Slimline Rectangle Die with white cardstock. I then stamped the flowers from the Mother's Day Tulips stamp set with Intense Black Ink. The lines in this stamp set are thick, so I wasn't sure if I would like them stamped with black ink as I don't like lots of black on my cards. I was going to color them with Copics, but when I saw the lines, I decided to use my new Karin Decobrush Markers. They are opaque, more like acrylic paint in a marker. SO COOL! And they blend really well while wet. I made the mistake of using white cardstock instead of watercolor paper, so I couldn't mix them as much as I want. The paper did get a little wet and did that thing that I don't know what it's called (some of the paper comes off and makes a mess haha),
I was going to leave the background white, but I ended up using a white Decobrush and just tapped the tip on my lightest blue and applied it that way. Like I said, easier on watercolor paper! I redrew my lines with a black fine tip marker as I don't like them when they are slightly painted over! I stamped the sentiment from the stamp set on white cardstock with black ink and embossed over it with clear embossing powder. I cut around the edges and attached it with foam tape. I also added some sparkling clear sequins.
CARD 2:
This ended up being my favorite card. I started by stamping the tulips with MFT Natural Ink on white cardstock twice. I colored both in with colored pencils. I then cut around each as I don't have the matching dies. I cut off the flower that is slightly closed and the big leaf on the bottom one. I die-cut a rectangle using the largest SSS Slimline Nested Rectangle dies from white cardstock.
I attached one set to the top of the card with foam tape under the top of the flowers. I then attached the second one to the bottom and cut off some of the stems. I overlapped them so that the lower part of the stems didn't show too much. I added one of the leaves I cut off on the bottom left. Again, I used foam tape behind all of the flowers so it looks really dimensional. I embossed a sentiment from the set on a banner die cut from Lawn Fawn Guava cardstock. I also used that behind the card. I used some sequins from the SSS Autumn Leaves Sequin Mix.
I embossed just a portion of the tulips on the top and bottom of a card size piece of Arches watercolor paper using white embossing powder. I kind of wish I had tilted the one on the top a little more. I then painted them in with Daniel Smith watercolors. I used Opera Pink on the top of each flower and Violet on the bottom and mixed the colors in the middle. I liked the look of the two tone, plus I was running out of colors to use for tulips as this was the last card I made!
I used a soft wash of the colors around the flowers and background. I used more water in the center so it was really soft. I then flicked some green and purple paint over the background. I had to make sure not to let these two colors mix as they don't look good together! I embossed a sentiment from the stamp set using Tim Holtz Wilted Violet Embossing Glaze.I mounted it on a purple cardstock card base. I then used some Crushed Grapes and Bottle Green Nuvo Drops around the open areas (too much maybe!) for more splotches. I also added some sparkling clear sequins and some purple sequins from the SSS Magical Sequin Mix.
CARD 4:
This is the card I made first and it was in the Hello Gorgeous Banner. I started with a piece of Arches watercolor paper die-cut with the largest rectangle in the SSS Nested Slimline Rectangle Dies. I can't seem to make a slimline or mini-slimline card without these dies! I guess I like my cards framed. I stamped the full image on teh right side using white embossing powder. The image is large, so it fills a full slimline card well. I painted it in with Daniel Smith watercolors. I used an intense orange and yellow mixed on each flower as I used to see those colors and loved them. I used a soft green wash of color behind the leaves and added a little bit of orange around the flowers.
As you can see from the right side of this photo, I tried several different approaches for a sentiment! I liked this one best which uses the CZ Spring In My Steps stamp and die from the same release. This is a must have set - I love this sentiment so much! I used Leaf Green embossing powder. I added some English Mustard Nuvo drops.
CARD 5:
I really love the look of flowers colored with colored pencils, so I tend to go that direction. I like being able to add the lines that flowers have in them - especially tulips. I used pencils for this one as well after stamping it with MFT Natural Ink. I die cut the outside edge with the SSS A2 Thin Frame dies so just a little color showed around the edges.
I stamped the sentiment from the stamp set with black ink 3 times and because it was over pencils, some areas didn't seem pure black. That bugged me! So then I embossed it with black embossing powder over the black ink and that fixed that! I used some Black Board and Pink Orchid Nuvo drops around the flowers. I'm glad the letters in the sentiments are thin and soft as they go well with the tulips.
I really enjoyed working with this Mother's Day Tulips stamp set five ways. At first, I didn't think I could do much with it since it is just one image that only fits on one side of a card. But I wanted to color it several times, so I challenged myself to figure that part out. I love how the flowers can be layered for a different look and used on all different card sizes. I hope you are enjoying the Hello Gorgeous release and were able to get some new products from it! Thanks so much for visiting today! xoxo suzy
