Today I have a really fun "one stamp, five ways" post to share with you that I spent a lot of time on (((so I hope you enjoy it)))! I used a stamp that I would never normally use for these posts. I picked a cling stamp from the Good Luck Charm release called Wavy Circles. It's really fitting for backgrounds of cards, not for the main design, so I stepped out of my comfort zone on this one and went a little crazy with ideas!
First I'll start by showing you all of the different ways and techniques I used this stamp for card backgrounds. Then I'll share my five cards with you.
1. Distress Oxide Inks with Water
I stamped the top one by applying 3 colors of Distress Oxide Inks to the stamp. I used Mermaid Lagoon on the top, Wilted Violet in the center, and Picked Raspberry for the bottom. After I applied the ink to the stamp, I used a brayer to blend the colors before stamping it. I stamped it on Neenah white cardstock. I let it dry and then decided to apply water sprinkles to it. The inks didn't move very well since it wasn't watercolor paper and because the ink had dried. I would have preferred it to run everywhere!
For the second purple one, I applied the Wilted Violet ink to the stamp and then stamped that on a piece of Ranger Watercolor Paper. I then applied some of the same 3 Distress Oxide ink colors over the stamped circles. Next I wet it quite a bit while it was still freshly done so the colors moved a lot more on this one. So the difference in the 2 is I applied ink with a brush around the stamped circles so the entire piece was covered with ink and I also added quite a bit of water so the inks all blended together.
2. Embossing Powder with Watercolors
For the one on the left, I embossed SSS Cream embossing powder with the Wavy Circles cling stamp on a piece of Ranger Watercolor Paper. I then painted teh background around the embossed circles with yellows, reds, and oranges.
For the one on the right, I tried making a card in a slimline design with the cling stamp. I embossed the cling stamp across the center of a piece of slimline sized Ranger Watercolor paper with clear embossing powder. I then painted it with watercolors in the colors of a rainbow. I ended up with one strip across the top and two strips across the bottom. I love how this turned out and I feel like it demonstrates that a regular size of cling stamp can work on a slim-line size card.
3. Gel Plate with Pawsitively Saturated Inks
I used a Gel Press and brayer for these designs. I started by applying Pawsitively Saturated Inks to the gel press. I pressed two colors - Tropic and Carnation onto the gel press in a messy manner - just overlapping the two colors. I then used a brayer to mix the colors together. I pressed the Wavy Circles cling stamp to the gel press to pick up the ink on it. I then stamped the cling stamp on white cardstock with the circle for teh top one which shows the soft mixed colors from the gel press. For the bottom one, I pressed a piece of white cardstock onto the gel press which picked up the ink that shows the cling stamp design subtly.
For this one, I did the same exact technique. I used Seafoam and Surf inks pressed onto the gel press. I used the brayer to mix the colors. I then pressed the cling stamp onto the gel press. The top image was stamped with the ink on the cling stamp. The bottom image was made by pressing cardstock onto the gel press to pick up the ink that had the pressed cling stamp on it. I splattered some water onto it to made it more splotchy.
I love how these turned out. The gel press gave them a soft look that is so pretty in real life.
5. Pawsitively Saturated Ink Applied in Lines Using Sides of Ink Pads and Multiple Colors
These to images were made with Pawsitively Saturated Inks in several colors. I first pressed Lemonade ink on the entire cling stamp and stamped that on white cardstock. I then pressed other colors of corals and greens onto the stamp using the edge of the ik pad pressed in lines over the cling stamp. I would add one color and press it on, then move to another color. I used this technique on a background on the card below which I posted on a previous blog post.
It's a busy look, but I like how it turns out and I think you could try a lot of different color combinations for different looks.
6. Multiple Colors of Embossing Powders
This one might be my favorite. I had recently received the new Tim Holtz set of Embossing Glazes on this card. I applied embossing powder to the back of the stamp. I then poured each color of embossing powder onto just a portion of the design. I started with teh bottom color first, the poured the second color over the bottom so it covered some spots on the color below it too. I kept going with the rainbow of colors trying to apply them in a wy that would allow the colors to mix between each (applied lightly on teh top and more solidly on teh bottom of each color. I used six colors in the Glaze set including Picked Raspberry, Candied Apple, Wild Honey, Twisted Citron, Salty Ocean, and Wilted Violet. These colors are so bright and pretty and because they are glazes they are a little bit transparent and very shiny!
7. Pawsitively Saturated Ink with Paper Towell
For this one, I applied Aspen PSInk to the cling stamp. I then folded some paper towels and pressed them onto the stamp so it would pick up some of the ink and add the pattern that was on the paper towels to the stamp. I then pressed it onto white cardstock it stamped a nice soft color with the design on it from the paper towels. I love how this worked as soft makes such a nice subtle card background. I think it would be fun to use different things to apply texture to the stamped design like bubble wrap. You could press it onto the ink to remove some and then stamp the design to get the texture from the bubble wrap. I used this same background on a card in a "one stamp, five ways" post that will be on the SSS blog tomorrow February 28th.
8. Pawsitively Saturated Ink and Stencil
I pressed a PSInk pad in Blush onto the stamp and stamped it on a piece of white cardstock. I then applied some of the same ink onto the top of the card with a SSS brush. After applying a little ink, I added a diagonal lined stencil to the design. I sprayed the back of the stencil with Pixie Spray and then pressed it onto the design. I applied more of the same color of ink with a brush over the stencil design. Because I added some ink before I applied the stencil, the top is darker than the bottom. This is another technique that would be fun to try with different stencils. It gives you a textured design on teh negative space from teh stamped design. You could also use a different color of ink for the ink blending over the stencil versus the stamped circles. Then you would see the stencil design over the circles.
9. Pawsitively Saturated Ink Applied with a Brayer and White Ink
When I use a Gel Press and a brayer, I end up with a lot of extra ink on the brayer. I rubbed the ink over a piece of cardstock several times with different inks from the the PSInk Trio 1 group of inks (Seafoam, Surf, and Ocean). I then stamped white ink onto the stamp and stamped that over the ink. I then the white adds a subtle design and would look nice over any colored background.
10. Embossing Glaze, Distress Oxide Ink, and Distress Oxide Ink Refill
I blogged this background and the card I made with it yesterday because it uses the brand new color of Tim Hottz distress ink called Saltwater Taffy. You can see the blog post here. I first embossed the Saltwater Taffy embossing glaze over white cardstock. I then rubbed some of the Saltwater Taffy Distress Oxide Ink over this piece. Last, I splattered some of the Saltwater Taffy ink refill over it and ended up with some very large drops which I did not intend to do! So imagine this with just small droplets and I think it would look better! I do like the tone on tone look here by using several of the different Distress Ink color products on one card front.
Now here are my 5 cards made with some of these backgrounds.
CARD 1:
I made this slimline card with the rainbow painted design on it. I had embossed the cling stamp with clear embossing powder and then used Daniel Smith watercolors (or Karin brushmarkers would work nice) to add the rainbow colors in lines across the card. I die-cut it with the largest rectangle from the SSS Nested Slimline Rectangle dies. I embossed a sentiment from the Well Wishes stamp set using Wow Ebony Black embossing powder. I die-cut it out with the matching dies. I then attached it to the bottom of the card with foam tape behind it. I added some Nuvo drops in Chalk Stick and Black Board around the sentiment.
CARD 2:
I used the Distress Oxide Ink stamped background for this card. I kept it very simple by just adding a large sentiment. I used the CZ Clean Line Stacks stamp set with the Wilted Violet Embossing Glaze and die cut it out with the matching dies. I then attached it to the center of the card with foam tape. I added some sparkling clear sequins around the sentiment.
CARD 3:
I kept this card very simple too as the background was so pretty, I didn't want to cover too much of it up. I used the Paper Hugs die by SSS and die-cut it twice with white cardstock. I glued them together and then attached them to the center of the card front. I used the background with the cling stamp stamped in white ink. I added some white drops around the sentiment with Chalk Stick embossing powder.
CARD 4:
I had some flowers and leaves I had made and they were ready to use on a card, so out they came for this one! I made them with my new Glimmer Hot Foil System with the gold foil that came with the system. I used the Sketched Rose Blossom and Leaves Hot Foil Plates by SSS and die cut them out with the matching dies. I used foam tape behind some and not others so they were layered. I added a sentiment from the new Reverse Lucky sentiment strips over the bottom of the flowers. I then used some gems from the Honeybee Back to Basics gem sticker sheet around the sentiment in black and gold. The background is from the cream embossed wavy circle images with watercolors over them.
CARD 5:
Thie rainbow background was my favorite! You can see all the cool colors of Tim Holtz embossing glazes in the photo. I added a sentiment from the Well Wishes stamp set using Wow Primary Ebony embossing powder. I die-cut it out with the matching dies. I then added some gems from the Honeybee Back to Basics gem stickers around the sentiment.
Whew, that's it! I hope these 10 ideas for this one Wavy Circles cling stamp have you motivated to try some of them! I still have all the other backgrounds I made to use on future cards which makes me happy. Thanks for visiting today and have a great week friends! Suzy
