I'm not sure when I am suppose to stop making holiday cards. This week is a new release by Simon Says Stamp that will have love products for Valentine's Day which is right around the corner. In this card making hobby (or job), I feel like I am always one holiday ahead of the current one I am living. So I'm going to keep making holiday cards right up until Christmas - hope that is ok with you!
Today I made a card using the Simon Says Stamp Winter Flower stamp set that was part of the SSS special holiday release/promotion recently. They released the stamp a few weeks ago and then released a matching die during the Die-cember release or you can buy it as shown above as a bundle. I had already made a card with it on this blog post HERE when it was released, but I decided to pull it out again as apparently I can't get enough poinsettia cards this year! I've made so many! Here is my latest:
I decided to go with a very different color scheme on this one since I've already made quite a few poinsettia cards. I started by stamping the floral stamp in the Winter Flower Stamp Set with black ink on the top of the card (using almost the entire stamp at an angle) and then again on the bottom of the card (very little again at an angle). I die-cut this piece using a rectangle die. I started by coloring the background with a black Copic marker. I knew I wanted it to be dramatic and I planned on a red flower, so I started with the black.
Once the background was colored, I decided to try white poinsettia's instead of red. I colored them a little with some Copics, but couldn't seem to get the shading right. So I pulled out my pencils and added a bit more color. I used some pale yellow, pale peach, and light brown. I colored the leaves with Copics and then shaded with pencils. Sometimes I use Copics over pencils - you just never know with me. Am I a mixed media artist because I combine all my coloring methods on one card? hahaha (NO!!!). I colored the berries with red Copics and decided they were toooooo red - they jumped off the card a bit. So I toned them down with a white pencil. See, using both works best!
I die-cut a frame using SSS Matte Gold Mirror cardstock and the MFT A2 Frame Dies. I like using this die for card mattes. It gives you the nice edge of a die-cut, but you don't have to use the entire piece of paper - just get the inside piece for something else. I embossed a sentiment from the XL Christmas Greetings Stamp and Die set with Antique Gold embossing powder. I think it looks so pretty against the black. I added some gold jewels around the sentiment and some Diamond Stickles and Gold Stickles on the edges of the petals and centers of the flowers.
What do you think about the white poinsettia choice? I like it against the black with the gold. This Winter Flower stamp set is so pretty and I still haven't used the matching die so I might give it one more shot! Thanks for visiting and keep coming back as my email notification system isn't working (I'll get it working first thing in the new year). I plan on making a few more Christmas cards before I start my shopping haha. And there is a release coming this week too! xo
