I love love love this fun Sun and Moon Mandala from the latest Simon Says Stamp release called Make Magic. It is a cling stamp that comes apart - here is an image of it:
You can remove the center pieces which contains the moon and the sentiment. I used it all together, but ended up covering up the sentiment with another one (so I could have removed it!). Here is my card:
I started by stamping the full Sun and Moon Mandala cling stamp on a piece of Arches watercolor paper with Intense Black Ink. I love that that ink works with any coloring medium and never smears as I have had so many problems with other black inks! I die-cut this piece into a smaller rectangle so I could mat it on a colored card base. I ended up matting the finished one on two colors of yellow to make it pop more.
I watercolored the image with my Daniel Smith watercolors. It was so fun to paint! But after I was done, of course I had to add some shading with colored pencils. I can never seem to get enough shading to satisfy me with just watercolors. Plus pencils blend so effortlessly over watercolors. Especially the waxy Prismacolors. After it was all painted, I painted the background around it as well with Sky Blue and Sapphire Blue Karin Brushmarkers. I love how intense their colors are. The only reason I didn't use them on all of the other areas is because with small areas, I'm too afraid they will bleed. I did use them for the sun as well now that I think about it - again to get a brighter yellow! Once I had used the Prismacolor pencils over the watercolor, they leave a really waxy film which made my black ink lines not show up. So then I drew over all of them with a fine tip black Micron. This took a while as you can imagine, but I loved how it brought the image back to life by having darker outlines. I color for therapy and with my house renovation in process, I need a lot of therapy, so I don't mind the extra work I create for myself sometimes haha!
I wanted the sentiment to be larger than the one that was already on the sun, so I stamped this sentiment from the SSS Hello Sunshine stamp set. I stamped it on a Sentiment Label die and used foam tape behind it. I then went a little crazy with my Nuvo Glitter Drops and basically used them over everything except the sun! Which made me wonder why I spent so much time shading all of my colors so much when I just covered them up anyway - therapy. Lots of therapy needed! I also used glitter drops on the background and around the sentiment. I used sparkling clear sequins around the sentiment as well.
I admit that this card took me a long time and definitely longer than it needed to. It was a bad day and my painter quit on me, so I think I colored it all day long to get myself out of a blue funk! And the sentiment reminded me that we really do create our own sunshine and I can choose to be happy during difficult times! The stamp I used is a cling stamp from the SSS Make Magic release called Sun and Moon Mandala and there are links to all of the products i used in this post below. Thanks for visiting! Suzy
