Today I have a "one stamp, 3 coloring method" blog post to share with you. I started this series a few months ago where I take one Simon stamp and show it colored with 3 different mediums. I usually keep all of the other elements the same so you can just see how the coloring medium impacts the outcome. I am using a stamp set from the STAMPtember release called Mix and Match Circles. I was immediately attracted to this set as I love circles and it looked so fun to play with. And it was! Here is an image:
I usually use stamp sets that you can color in for this series and then I use Copics, colored pencils, and watercolors. But this stamp is a little different in that the stamps are flat stamps, not stamps you color in. So for this type of stamp, I used a light ink and then colored pencils over the ink, embossing powder, and colored inks. Here are my 3 cards:
CARD 1: COLORED PENCILS
I used MFT Natural Ink and stamped almost all of the circles in the stamp set on a card size piece of white cardstock. I overlapped some here and there and just lightly covered the entire piece. It was fun arranging them. I left out the sun one and the big burst one on this card (I did use it on the other two and it's my favorite stamp in the set!). I also didn't use the one that looks like a maze. There are so many circles in this set with so many sizes, that the patterns you can create are limitless!
I colored over each circle with colored pencils. The are fairly opaque, so it was easy to color the light color of ink. I went with blues, pinks, and purples because those are my favorite colors! I stamped several of the small words in the stamp set with black ink inside and around the circles. Next, I added a bunch of Nuvo Drops to the circles and in between the circles. I used them over all the small dots on the little circles and realized it didn't look good, so I didn't do it on the other 2 cards. I did like the dimension and "sheen" it added to the one layer card. I die-cut all 3 card bases with the Simon A2 Thin Frame die before matting them on cardstock card bases. I die-cut the "friends" die with the same color of cardstock as the card base and then die-cut the word with white cardstock twice. I layered these and attached them to the top of the card.
2. EMBOSSING POWDER
Every direction I gave for the above card applies to this one and the next one except for the coloring medium. I used white cardstock for the base and die-cut it with the largest frame from the SSS A2 Thin Frame dies. I then embossed all of the circles in the set and added in that big splatter that I love so much. I used all my embossing powders in teals, blues, purple (only have 1 glitter one - need to get on that!), reds, and pinks. Since these are all my favorite colors, I had quite a few to pick from! I think I have 7 different shades of aqua and teal! haha
Next, I stamped all of the small words in black ink. I then die-cut the friend die with the base the same color as the card base and doubled the word friend so it stood up more. I tried not to use as many Nuvo drops on this one since the embossing powder already gave it some texture. I realized I didn't leave a very good spot for my word die on this one - I didn't like how busy it looked around it since I had stamped the little words so close to it. So this one ended up not being my favorite!
3. SSS COLORED INKS
I think this one ended up being my favorite, but that might have less to do with the "coloring medium" I used and more to do with the circle placement. I really liked the big burst on this one. This card was definitely the most easy one to make! I don't use my colored ink pads very often, so it was nice to put them to use. Again, I had lots of colors to choose from in my color family. I tried to use two colors on some of them stamping it with a light color and then a darker shade on just the outside edges. Sometimes the color needed two coats with my Misti and sometimes just one depending on how dark I wanted it. I could stamp this way forever. If I was mass producing these cards, I would definitely go with colored inks!
Same steps on this one, so no need to repeat! Which one is your favorite? I could play with these circles over and over once I used them with colored ink. I think the pencils are pretty, but who wants to color all of these circles with pencils (besides me?!?!?!). And embossing powder is always pretty, but let's be honest - it is time consuming. I did enjoy using quite a few of my colors though. I only used Simon inks, but if I had opened it up to ALL my inks, I might have been stamping these for days!
Thanks for visiting today. I hope you are having a good weekend friends! This stamp set is called Mix and Match Circles and is in stock at SSS if you are interested. All products I used on this post are listed below in the supply list linked to SSS. Thank you! Suzy
