Today's post uses a stamp set that is really unique and creative and different and super cute/fun. I have NEVER stamped or colored a unicorn before, so at first I was a little unsure of this set. But once I started playing with it - it was love. Unicorn love x 4. Here is a look at this new stamp set by My Favorite Things called Magical Unicorns:
I created exactly FIVE projects with this set - go me - stuck to the title this time! When it comes to flowers, I can't stop thinking of ways to use them, but with creatures, it is more straightforward and I only have so many ideas in this head! So these cards are ALL about the unicorns! But I did try to incorporate some different techniques in each one...
Let's start with the background of this card. I have shown you using texture paste with a stencil a few times. It occurred to me that maybe I could also emboss with a stencil. This was my attempt at making this work and it is far from perfect and probably won't be repeated. It worked, but it was hard to get the stencil pattern even or perfect. Which is ok with dots, but may not be a technique that works with all stencils. I started by taping the dot stencil to a piece of watercolor paper. Then I rubbed my Versamark ink pad over the stencil attempting to cover all the dots with the ink. Then I carefully removed the tape on the sides and lifted the stencil. I poured clear embossing powder on the dots and then embossed them. Next, I watercolored over them and then die-cut the piece into a stitched rectangle with MFT Blueprints 13 die.
I wanted the images to have no outlines, so I stamped the unicorns on watercolor paper with Tattered Rose Distress Ink (nice neutral color). I painted them with watercolors mixing pinks, purples and blues for their bodies. I had no idea what color a Unicorn is so I just went with my imagination (haha - as aren't they an animal that is only in our imaginations?!?!?!). I forgot to paint the one on the left's feet black! I also stamped some clouds with a light ink and watercolored them. I die-cut the rainbow and cloud from the MFT End of the Rainbow die set out of watercolor paper and painted them. I stamped the sentiment on the cloud with Versamark Ink and embossed with white embossing powder.
I used white Mixed Media paper for the base of this card. I die-cut it into a stitched rectangle from MFT Blueprints 13. Then I rubbed Picked Raspberry Ink on it from the center outward. Next, I used a dot stencil and some texture paste to make dots on some white cardstock and die-cut that into a cloud border using Mama Elephant Stitched Trio die set. (I actually had this scrap left from a previous card I made - see, always keep your scraps!). I placed that piece on top of the pink piece and attached both to a pink card base.
Next, I stamped the unicorns on white cardstock with SSS Black Intense Ink and colored them with Copic markers. I also stamped the little castle and the clouds/rainbow and colored. I die-cut all out with the matching dies and placed them on the background. Last, I added three different size sequins from my new PPP Sparkling Clear Sequin Mix (love that their are four different sizes in this package - 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm!). Best Buy Ever! Oh, and I added some details to the unicorns with a white Uniball.
I die-cut the largest size stitched rectangle from my Lawn Fawn large stitched rectangle set (it is the size of a card front) and watercolored it blue. I die-cut a cloud out of it using the End of the Rainbow die set. i then used this negative space as a shaker component. I cut two more clouds out of fun foam so they could back the card (double it so it is thicker). I put PPP 4mm sparkling clear sequins inside the cloud and covered the other side with white cardstock. I attached all of that to a white card base. I stamped the sentiment on the top of the card.
Next, I stamped the horses on white cardstock and colored them with Copic markers. I also colored one of the little castles and some of the cloud images from the stamp set. I attached all to the front of the card. I outlined the cloud with a black fine tip marker.
I started this card with a die-cut rectangle from MFT Blueprints 13 out of white cardstock. I then embossed some of the stars from the set randomly over the center of this piece using Versamark Ink and white embossing powder. Then I rubbed Distress Inks over the stars using three colors and overlapping them as I went: Squeezed Lemonade, Spun Sugar, and Tumbled Glass. What did we ever do before Distress Inks?!? They are so worth the money although I much prefer the small size to the large size - way easier to store in the containers made for them and easy to transport that way. I haven't had any run out of ink yet either and I use them a lot! Once the background was done, I die-cut another one of the large clouds from the End of the Rainbow set and stamped the sentiment on it. I embossed it with my only WOW Royal Crush embossing powder that I TOTALLY LOVE AND NOW WANT OTHER COLORS! It is so pretty with blues and purples and glitter in it. I stamped my little unicorn on white cardstock and colored him with Copic markers shading him different pretty colors so he is a little crazy! I attached him to the top of the card with foam tape behind him. I added some of my new PPP sparkling clear sequin mix to finish it.
I had fun painting these Unicorns as I got to really use my imagination and go way out! This one was stamped on white cardstock and colored with Copics again. This time I just dabbed different soft colors all over creating a pattern and not blending them. This guy even got a wing - although maybe that makes him and her - no knowledge of sexual differences in Unicorns. Hope that sentence doesn't drive weirdo's to my blog now - haha! I die cut a tag from MFT Blueprints 6 set and rubbed distress ink on it. I then outlined it with a fine tip marker. I added the sentiment to the bottom and a colored star and three sequins to the top.
So what do you think? Did I do these little mystical/magical creatures justice? I'm still not a unicorn fan, but I do love this set - I think it is super cute. But I love every set that Torico illustrates (known as Birdie Brown)! She is my favorite MFT illustrator for sure! Hope you enjoyed this post and I'll be back in a couple days with the adorable Simon Says Stamp Beautiful Ride stamp set. In the supply list below, I have listed some products that you can purchase at either MFT or SSS twice. The first links to MFT and the second links to SSS. Ok, bye bye! Suzy
PS: Another BIG thank you to my favorite blog readers: Carol, LC, Nora, and Jeanne for always leaving me the sweetest comments on my post. I mean to get back to you on everyone of them and then I get behind, but I will! xoxoxox
Oh how fun! I actually held this set in my hand this past weekend at a stamp/scrap show and I put it back! I didn't think I'd use it enough. Grrrr!! Look at all the fabulous cards/tags one can make with this set. I adore how you have colored the unicorns. They are so fun. I really like the multicolored ones where you've blended the colors. Especially that last one on the tag with the very light blended colors. I also really like your backgrounds. You did an amazing job on each of these creations! Thanks so very much for sharing!

These are all so sweet and so fun! It's all the little details that have me in awe...the embossed dots background, the textured paste polka dot cloud, the fancy lines and doodling that you add that are always just the perfect touches, and of course all the gorgeous colors! You absolutely did these unicorns justice by capturing the delight and the beauty of this stamp set. I can't wait to see what you have in store next!
