Whale You Be Mine?

TWO BLOG POSTS IN ONE DAY! What has happened to me?!?!?! I'm just really into making cards right now. I have no idea why - well, actually I DO have an idea why. I am in love with these Lawn Fawn stamps and want to play with them all.the.time!

Today (tonight!) I'm sharing two cards I made with the Lawn Fawn set called Whale You Be Mine.  This is another mini set that is only $4. Best $4 I've ever spent! 

I wanted to show you both cards first before I talk about them as I used the same exact techniques on both. I wanted to create some water for my whales to sit on. I used two stamps both in different sets to create this water on both of these cards: Gleeful Gardens and Hello Sunshine.  In both of these sets, I used the dotted lines. They went the opposite direction (bump on each is on opposite side) so they worked well together. On the first card above, I used some darker colors of Distress Inks including Salty Ocean, Peacock Feathers, and Tumbled Glass. On the second card, I used only the lightest color, Tumbled Glass.

I stamped the lines randomly on watercolor paper. Sometimes I would stamp them on scrap paper first so they were lighter. I also covered portions up so some of the swirled shapes appeared to be behind others. Once I had all the lines stamped, I went over them with a watercolor brush blending the colors into each other. To add more color, I stamped my pads on a clear stamping pad and applied more with my watercolor brush. I prefer a watercolor brush to a water brush as it gives me more control. I kept the second card background very light by using only the Tumbled Glass ink and stamping it first on scratch paper.

On the top card, I watercolored the sea background and then cut out a square using an MFT rectangle from Blueprints 7 Dynamics. On the second background, I die cut a stitched rectangle from the Lawn Fawn Large Stitched Rectangle die set and then painted it leaving the edges white. Different looks and both worked well just depending on your preference.

Once I had the water backgrounds created on watercolor paper, I cut some additional squares and rectangles out. I used a large stitched square die from the MFT Blueprints 8 Dynamics. I cut it out of a navy blue "bubble" paper which went with my water theme and matched the color in my whales. I used MFT Snocone Cardstock for the card base. For the rectangular card, I cut all the rectangles out from the same Lawn Fawn Stitched Rectangle die set. I used a dotted Avery Elle paper in turquoise. For the scalloped frame, I used the MFT Blueprints 20 set (I love this set the most of all my Blueprints!). 

Now it was time for the FUN part of these cards. I painted about 20 of the Lawn Fawn whales from the Whale You Be Mine stamps. I tried all different techniques to see which one I liked the best. On the top card, I stamped them in black ink - Ranger Jet Black Archival ink as it is waterproof and perfect for watercoloring. For the second set of whales, I stamped them with Distress Black Soot ink, but first I stamped them on scratch paper a couple times so the outlines were very faint. I wanted the look of a watercolored image without a border. On both sets, I watercolored them with Stormy Sky and Black Soot Distress Inks.

I used the Whale You Be Mine die-cuts to cut out the whales and their water spouts. I added some Worn Lipstick Distress Ink for the heart on the second card and also stamped some additional hearts from the Lawn Fawn Sending Hedgehogs stamp set. After everything was colored, I glued all the pieces down to my backgrounds and added some Wink of Stella clear glitter pen to the top of the hearts and some white Uniball marker to some of the whales.

Suzy, what is the navy paper with the circles? I know I have it in my stash somewhere, but cant seem to remembrr the manufacturer. It is so cute for water themed cards. Help!!
